Mike Morgan

Acquired in the 1999 draft. Boy, was I taunted on this one. The Zingrods have had a few cagey old codgers on the staff in the past, but this guy has to be the walking definition of "wily veteran". Setting the major league mark for most teams played for is a questionable record, but it could work for him. Some pitchers who've been around a while have faced most of the batters in the league before, but hell, this guy has played with most of them. Still, it's hard to argue with a pitcher who starts the season 4-0.

Update 5/24/1999: Morgan was released today, and oh boy, do I wish I had cut him one week sooner. The writing was on the wall when he got lit up by Cleveland the week before, but I decided to stick with him for one more start, seeing how badly Baltimore had been underachieving and assuming that even if he gave up a few runs, the Texas offense would be able to stick it to the abyssmal Baltimore staff even worse. Naturally, it ended up being Mussina pitching that day, and the Baltimore offense broke out of their funk by torching Morgan for 8 runs. He didn't even make it out of the first inning.

On the other hand, Morgan was the Zingrods' winningest pitcher at the time he was released. It's just that he would have been 6-3 with a 4.89 ERA if he had been released a week earlier, instead of 6-4 with a 6.26 ERA. Well, despite getting greedy at the end, I still think I got the last laugh.

Update 3/31/2000:The Zingrods decided to go with younger arms in 2000 and Morgan was released in the 1999-2000 offseason.
